Training FAQ's

Q. I'm just the Asst Coach, do I have to take all the training?
A. YESSSS!, a thousand times, Yes. All coaches (Head & Assistant) must take the same training to be AYSO-certified volunteers.

Q. I signed up for the Field session, do I need anything else?
A. YES, you MUST complete the online coach course for the division you are coaching prior to attending the In-Person Class/Field session. Please bring either the course completion email you received from etrainU showing Proof of Completion or print the Online Course Certificate. You will not be allowed to take the In-Person course without proof you completed the online course.

Other Important Information

To be a Head or Assistant Coach, you MUST be 18 years old. No exceptions

AYSO Requires Age Appropriate Training

A higher level Coach License does not automatically qualify you for a lower division. You must be certified for each division you wish to coach.
Example: If you have an Intermediate Coach License and wish to coach 10U, you will need to take the 10U Coach course.
Exception: If you are 8U Coach certified, you do not need to take the 6U Coach Course to coach a 6U team.

The 12U Coach course is a prerequisite to coach in the Upper Divisions (14U/16U/19U). You must also complete a season in-grade.
In our region, the 12U Coach course consists of the online (Part 1) course and a 2-Day Class/Field (Part 2) course: You mu st attend *BOTH* Class and Field In-Person sessions to complete the 12U Coach License, No Exceptions.

AYSO Coach Training Equivalency
The AYSO Equivalency Policy recognizes US Soccer Coaching Certifications for those who have coached at the Club, High School or College level. If you hold a US Soccer Coaching License/Certification, you may apply for equivalency. US Soccer licenses transfer as follows...
Grassroots 4v4, equivalent to AYSO's 6/8U Coach eligible to participate in the 10U Coach course
Grassroots 7v7, equivalent to AYSO's 10U Coach eligible to participate in the 12U Coach course
Grassroots 9v9 AND 11v11 In-Person
, equivalent to AYSO's 12U Coach eligible to participate in the Intermediate Coach course
Older E License, equivalent to AYSO's Intermediate Coach eligible to participate in the Advanced Coach course
Older A-C & D (issued after 1/1/2013) Licenses, equivalent to AYSO's Advanced Coach eligible to take the National Coach course
See here for further details: AYSO Coach Training Equivalency, Contact: [email protected] if this applies to you to begin the application process. Please attach all licenses/certificates you would like to be considered under this policy. Also include a brief summary of your Player/Coaching experience in a resume-like format. Thank you.

Double Head Coaches:
You must be certified for each division you wish to coach. If you are coaching more than one division (example: 8U & 10U), you will need to complete the online course for each division. You will also enroll in each Field session (to receive credit) but only need to attend the higher division Field session. In this case, the 10U Field session to receive the certification for each division.

Download your Course Certificates: We highly recommend keeping a pdf copy of the certificate for each course you complete for your records. The AYSO registration and certification systems often experience data-loss. This is the only way you can provide proof of completion if this occurs.

Please contact [email protected] if you have any questions.

Hello Coaches,

If you are not able to attend the course sessions that are offered by Region 65 or Area G (Intermediate or Advanced), you MUST find another Training Event in AYSOU to complete the Coach License training for the Division you are coaching.  You MUST complete the prerequisite Online courses before attending the In-Person Field Session / Part 2 course.

Region 13

Intermediate Coach Course
20th Jul 2024 8:00am - 5:00pm [America/Los Angeles]
La Salle College Preparatory High School, E Sierra Madre Blvd, Pasadena CA
Instructor: Marco Quezada

The Intermediate Coach Class has two portions. There is the Pre-Course work and the Live Course work. The two courses are not tied to each other. You can do the Pre-Course work at any time, but it must be finished at least one week before the Live Course you will take since all that work has to be turned in to the Live Course instructor. Without this work, the instructor is told by National not to let the coach take the course. The instructor needs time to go over your work and give you feedback.

Parts I & II of Intermediate Coaching must be completed before the class.
You must also do a “Training Plan” and submit it to me no later than one week before the class.

Towards the end of Part II, under Menu, there is “Intermediate Training Session,” which takes you through 3 pages about the plans. “AYSO Training Plan” starts to tell you what to do to create this plan. “Drafting Your Training Plan” helps you understand how to do it. “Field Session Topics” is the slide that tells you the four possible subjects of your training plan that you have to create. You cannot just do any subject. You have to choose one of those four subjects.

Please follow the directions carefully. Again, there are training plans in the book that correspond to each of the topics in the online module. I understand that some of you have training sessions you have been using and liking, but if you use one of those, be prepared to indicate which of the assigned topics yours is and how each of the stages in your session fulfills the requirements as spelled out in the module.

Please note that participating in the classroom and field sessions is impossible without completing the pre-course work.

Intermediate Lesson Plans:
In the “Intermediate Coach Pre-course Part II” presentation, there is a slide called “Field Session Topics” that you can access from the “Menu on the left side of the plan.” Towards the bottom is a slide called “Field Session Topics” this slide tells you your lesson plan has to be one of the 12 topics from the slide. Four blue markers on this page cover four general areas (Goalkeeping, Defending, Midfield, and  Attacking). The markers will expand to cover three topics if you click on the markers.

The 12 topics are:

Goalkeeping
               Dealing with 1v1
               Shot stopping (including diving)
               Dealing with crosses

Defending
               Individual Defending
               Zonal Defending
               Defending Principles of Play

Midfield
               Receiving and turning
               Combination Plays
               Build up through midfield

Attacking
               Attacking from wide areas
               Finishing
               Attacking Principles of Play

You cannot decide to do a subject not from this list. I will return your assignment if it is not from this list. Also, the lesson plan has to be on the same topic and go through the build-up process as explained in the book and the presentations.

Training plans must be emailed to Marco Quezada (rcregion13@gmail.com) by Saturday, July 13th.

WHAT TO BRING:
         NOTEPAD + PEN OR PENCIL
·        COPY OF YOUR TRAINING PLAN

Please bring sunscreen, athletic clothing, a hat, a chair, a pen/pencil, and closed-toed shoes you are comfortable running around in (no flip-flops).

Area 10W Intermediate Coach 14U (Online Part 1 + Live In-Person Course Part 2)
4th Aug 2024 8:00am - 6:00pm [America/Los Angeles]
Rio Mesa High School, Central Ave, Oxnard CA
Instructors: Eric Dettloff, Andrew Roteman

The Intermediate Coach Class has two portions. There is the Pre-Course work and the Live Course work. The two courses are not tied to each other. You can do the Pre-Course work at any time as long as it is finished two weeks before the Live Course you are going to take, since all that work has to be turned into the Live Course instructor. Without this work the instructor is told by National to not let the coach take the course. The instructor needs time to go over your work and give you feedback.

The class will be held at Rio Mesa High School 545 Central Ave, Oxnard. The morning will be in the classroom and the afternoon will be on the field where you will present Stage 3 of your Training Plan.

Please read what I wrote below because it answers the questions I have been asked. It also tells you what needs to be done and where to find the things that need to be done. It also helps you with assignments.

This class actually has a grading scale for it in regards to your passing the course. There is prework to be done. I need it at least two weeks before the class as I have to review what you sent me and make comments. When you finish Modules I and II you can print out the “Intermediate Coach Certificate” to email it to me along with your Training Plan. I will also need a print out from your list of classes taken, showing that you took the 12U coach class. I also need you to send me proof that you took Safe Haven and CDC Concussion. There are points for all of these requirements. To get to your Skills Passport click on that at your Volunteer page in SportsConnect. You can print your skills passport as a downloadable PDF by clicking on the button at the upper right.

See below for info that was listed for the class but you may not have looked at for course requirements and additional info:

U12 Coach certification is a prerequisite. Pre-course work must also be completed to attend this session. This notice is part of the sign up for the Live Course.

In AYSOU, go to “My Courses” and you should see “Intermediate Coaching Training”, click open
In that folder, you should see
Intermediate Coaching: Part I
Intermediate Coaching: Part II
Intermediate Coach Certificate
Intermediate Coach eBook Download Site
Intermediate Training Plan: Digital Version
Intermediate Training Plan: Print Version

You will also need to open the eBook which you need to read. There are sections on how to do a training plan which you need to do per below to be able to pass the course. There are also a blank digital and print version of a training plan for you to fill out per requirements.

If you are not able to open your ebook, I cannot help you as I have no rights to this. You have to call National to resolve the issue. None of us volunteers can help you with any eBook issues. You have to call National to resolve the issue. They are the only ones have the tools to help you.

Parts I & II of Intermediate Coaching need to be completed before the class. You also need to do a “Training Plan” and submit it to me 2 weeks before the class. Towards the end of Part II under Menu there is “Intermediate Training Session” takes you through 3 pages that talks about the plans. “AYSO Training Plan” starts to tell you what to do to create this plan. “Drafting Your Training Plan” helps you understand how to do it. “Field Session Topics” is the slide that tells you the 4 possible subjects of your training plan that you have to create. Now you have 3 more modules to complete. Back at the “My Courses” tab there are 3 courses that need to be completed, “AYSO’s Safe Haven”, “CDC: Concussion Course” and “AYSO’s Summary of the Laws of the Game”.

Please note it will not be possible to participate in the classroom and field sessions without completing the pre course work.

Intermediate Lesson Plans:
In the “Intermediate Coach Pre-course Part II” presentation there is a slide called “Field Session Topics” that you can access from the “Menu on the left side of the plan”. Towards the bottom is a slide called “Field Session Topics” per this slide it tells you your lesson plan has to be one of the 12 topics from the slide. Please use the forms provided from your lesson plans. You will be coaching stage three of your training plan during the field session of this course. I would recommend reviewing the training plans contained in the Intermediate Coaches Manual. If you should have questions regarding this activity or wish for your training plan to be reviewed prior to in-person class, email training session directly to me. Completion of the 12U course is a pre-requisite to this Intermediate Course.

Please submit your training plan at least seven (7) days prior to the training to Matt & JJ and bring a copy of your training plan to the event.

All the information you need for this class is included in the AYSOU Training sections. Attendance alone does not guarantee you a pass. Rio Mesa High School, Central Ave, Oxnard CA
Instructors: Andrew Roteman, Eric Dettloff, Christopher Ruffinelli, Loring Navarro

The Advance Coach Class has two portions.

The class will be held at Rio Mesa High School 545 Central Ave, Oxnard in the Library. The whole class takes place inside, there is no field work.

Please read what I wrote below because it answers the questions I have been asked. It also tells you what needs to be done and where to find the things that need to be done. It also helps you with assignments.

See below for info that was listed for the class but you may not have looked at for course requirements and additional info:

Intermediate Coach certification is a prerequisite. Pre course work must also be completed to attend this session. This notice is part of the sign up for the Live Course.

In AYSOU, go to “My Courses” and you should see “Advanced Coach”, click open

In that folder, you should see
Advanced Coach: Part I
Advanced Coach: Part II
Advanced Coach Certificate
Match Analysis Assignment: Part III
Match Analysis Video First Half
Match Analysis Video Second Half
Match Analysis Assignment: Part IV
Self-Reflection Assignment: Part V
Advanced Coach eBook Download Site
Advanced Coach Training Plan: Digital Version
Advanced Coach Training Plan: Print Version

Parts I & II of Advanced Coach need to be completed before the class. You also need to complete “Self-Reflection Assignment: Part V” and “Match Analysis Assignment: Part III”. In “Advanced Coach: Part II Section II is the portion of the pre course dealing with Match Analysis. You should also review “Match Analysis” in your book pages 82 to 95. This will help you in your assignment which is on the second page of the module. “Match Analysis Assignment: Part IV” is really not another assignment but a video giving additional information on how to do “Training Plan Design”.

Based on your match analysis, you also need to develop a complete “4 Stage Training Session” to address the issue you wrote on using AYSO diagramming standards. Follow the directions in regards to submitting it to me 2 weeks before the class. This is building on the work you did in the Intermediate Coach Class, if you took the class in the last four years. If you took the Intermediate Coach Class longer than 4 years ago, you should open up the Intermediate Coach Pre-Course work and review the Training Session Material which you did not get in the course over 4 years ago.

Now you have 2 more modules to complete. Back at the “My Courses” tab there are two free courses that need to be completed,
“AYSO’s Safe Haven”, and “CDC: Concussion Course”. These two modules are 10% of your grade.

In the afternoon, you will do another “Match Analysis”, a “Half Time Talk” and Stage 3 presentation of your Training Session. There will also be a test at the end.

Please note it will not be possible to participate in the classroom session without completing the pre course work.

14U / Intermediate Coach Course

Prerequisites:
You must have completed the 12U Coach License and a season in-grade (12U) as a Head or Assistant Coach to be eligible to take the Intermediate Coach course. You must also complete the online course, AYSO's Summary of the Laws of the Game

The Intermediate Coach class has two components, the online Pre-Course (Part 1) and the (Part 2) In-Person course. You can do the Pre-Course work at any time, but it must be finished at least one week before the In-Person Course since all that work has to be turned in to the In-Person Course instructor. Without this work, the instructor is told by AYSO National not to let the coach take the course. The instructor needs time to go over your work and give you feedback.

The Training Plan

As part of the online Intermediate Coach (Part 1) course you will create a Training Plan. In most cases you will submit it to the instructor at least one week before the class. Each Instructor may do things differently so please read the course description in AYSOU to make sure you comply with the requirements.
